What joy to teach you piano.

Hi, I'm Sophie! I'm a devoted, enthusiastic, caring, cheerful, and conscientious piano teacher, for both adults and children.

I firmly believe in the ability of music lessons to enhance growth and development in all areas of life. While learning how to play the piano and read music, my students employ skills of critical listening, active engagement, recovery from setbacks, focus and persistence, and respect for themselves, others, and the creative process. It is an honor to equip my students with these invaluable tools for navigating the world!

I began my piano studies at the ripe age of 3, and was taught by renowned Suzuki teacher Rita Hauck in Cincinnati. I moved to Seattle at the age of 9, and began lessons with Yunbo Cassady, the Washington MTNA Chair. I was awarded many accolades during my youth, and played with as a soloist with four youth and semi-professional orchestras, including a rendition of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with both the Seattle Philharmonic and the Seattle Symphony. I also studied the cello at a competitive level, and was Principal Cellist of the Cascade Youth Symphony for three years.

I attended the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and received her degree in Classical Piano Performance under the tutelage of the inimitable Jon Kimura Parker, graduating summa cum laude. While living in Houston, I was hired as accompanist for the Galena Park School District, and accompanied 7 area choirs for many concerts and competitions. After moving to Portland in 2011, I began to teach private piano lessons, and developed my warm, mindful, deeply customized teaching approach — which I continue to use with great success. I've been told my love of teaching is infectious!

In Portland, OR, I served as an OMTA member, a faculty member at Resound NW Music School, and hosted a robust teaching schedule at my home studio. Since moving to New England, I offer the option of in-home lessons in Amherst, MA, or online lessons via Zoom.

The Bottom Line:

Seeing the countless skills — and boundless joy! — that my students acquire from their piano studies is one of my favorite things in the whole wide world. I'd love to support you in learning piano and embracing a love of music. Let's play!
