Olympia Symphony: "Jazz Colored Glasses"

  • Washington Center for the Performing Arts (map)

The third concert in the Olympia Symphony’s 2019-2020 Season: “Vision: Through the Lens of Music”:

For the first OSO concert in the 2020s we return to the "Roaring 20’s" with jazz-inspired, Broadway-blockbuster works by George Gershwin: An American in Paris (complete with honking taxi horns!) and the beloved Rhapsody in Blue -- with pianist Sophie Lippert as soloist. "The Chairman Dances" is a Foxtrot for Orchestra, taken from John Adams' sensational opera Nixon in China. In honor of Black History Month the OSO will present the rarely-performed Ballade by English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who found his biggest fame in the USA.

Program:
COLERIDGE-TAYLOR: Ballade in A minor
GERSHWIN: An American in Paris
BEETHOVEN: “Turkish March” from The Ruins of Athens
ADAMS: The Chairman Dances
GERSHWIN: Rhapsody in Blue (Sophie Lippert, piano)

Huw Edwards, Music Director and Conductor
